Dining Chair Selection Guide | coconordic

Chair Guide

A different chair
changes your dining experience.

Dining chairs are furniture pieces you'll spend a lot of time with, second only to your table. By selecting them from multiple perspectives, not just design but also compatibility with table height, leg material, and seat specifications, your daily meals can become a richer experience.

01

First, match the height with your table

The first thing to check when choosing a chair is its height compatibility with your table. A distance of 25-30cm from the seat to the tabletop is considered the standard for comfortable dining. The ideal seat height can be estimated by subtracting this value from the table height.

  • First check the table height (generally 70-75cm)
  • 目安の座面高:テーブル高 − 約27cm
  • Be careful with thick tabletops as they can hit your thighs
  • If using a cushion, subtract its thickness
02

Harmonize leg design with the table

Choose chair legs that balance with your table. If your table has a prominent pedestal base, pairing it with chairs with thick legs might hide the base. If the table legs are slender and delicate, you can either match the chairs with a similar tone or create rhythm in the space by contrasting them.

03

Armrests or armless: changing the impression of the space

Armchairs give a dining room a more formal and settled atmosphere. However, they take up more space, so it's essential to check if they can fit under the table. For rectangular tables, a common styling is to place armchairs at the head and foot of the table, and armless chairs along the long sides.

Styling image of armchairs and armless chairs
  • Armchairs are wider than armless chairs (approx. +10-15cm)
  • Check if the armrest height is lower than the tabletop
  • Armless chairs are easier to move if you frequently stand up and sit down
  • Placing armed chairs at the head and armless chairs along the sides is a natural arrangement
04

Choose seat specifications according to your lifestyle

Upholstered or non-upholstered seats directly affect not only the appearance but also ease of maintenance. Fabric and leather upholstery add comfort and warmth, but care must be taken with stains during meals. For households with children or pets, a material that is easy to wipe clean or a non-upholstered model is practical.
